Cutting technology
At a time when industry is facing the challenge of balancing efficiency and environmental compatibility, cutting technology plays a crucial role for many manufacturing companies. In this area of research, we focus on the development and optimization of tools and machining processes. The aim here is to achieve efficient, resource-saving, and sustainable production.
Our focus includes the optimization and redevelopment of tool geometry and vibration behavior, increasing energy and resource efficiency, and the data-supported optimization of process parameters.
We are able to test our innovative approaches with the help of our extensive and state-of-the-art equipment in machine tools and production measurement technology for milling, turning, drilling, and sawing processes. Our research projects cover both fundamental scientific questions and application-oriented developments. The latter are to be transferred directly into practical application through our close cooperation with industry in order to increase the competitiveness of companies and make a positive contribution to the environment.
Tool development and process optimization
- Simulative approaches using finite elements and grinding simulation
- Experimental testing and analysis using extensive measurement equipment
- Improvement of dynamic tool behavior by reducing vibrations in the tool and machine
Tool and workpiece characterization
- Optical measurement of workpieces to assess dimensional accuracy and surface quality
- Optical measurement of tools to analyze wear behavior and determine cutting edge rounding
- In-process measurement of cutting forces, vibration, and acoustics to assess tool behavior
Reducing the carbon footprint
- Reduction of energy consumption in the machining process
- Reduction in the use of critical raw materials, such as carbide
- Calculation and presentation of the environmental impact of tools, machines, and processes using life cycle assessment in accordance with DIN 14040 and 14044
